Abstract

Movies are parts of the literary works interesting to be analyzed in research because we do not only reveal many issues but we also analyze Cinematography elements. This research takes one of old movies, released in 1997, to be analyzed. GI JANE is an American action drama directed by Ridley Scott showing about feminism issue, especially, the oppression done patriarchy towards women. The repression is done to obstruct the women to have the same position with the men, in this case, in carrying out Army works. The society of patriarchy consider that women do not have power as they do because of the bodies of women. This brings about the researcher decide to use the movie as the primary data in this research that it has its objective to be reached. It is how woman’s power representation is reflected through Jordan O’Neil’s characterization and actions. To analyze this objective, this study uses qualitative approach and observe and library research. It applies Cinematography theories, characterization and shot, to investigate the main character’s characterization, and Feminism theory focusing on radical one to reveal Jordan O’Neil’s actions, the main character, to break the patriarchy rules and values. The findings show that Jordan O’Neil changes her characterization as the uniforms and the work place. She is soft, neat and feminine when she works as a topographical analyst which she does her job indoor. She becomes strong and masculine when she participates in the US Navy training. Besides, she fights the oppression done by the male participants and instructor by using her own ways. Her ways are seen through her actions that they become her power to face the repression. It concludes that women have rights to be equal as the men in any fields, including Army training. They also have their own power to undertake the harder works like Army training.
