The Portrayal of Women’s Intelligent through Nanisca’s Strategies to Release the Citizens of Small Kingdoms from The Slave Trade in The Woman King Film

Abstract

The Woman King is a film chosen to be the object of this research. It is an American historical action-adventure film about Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. This study focuses on showing the portrayal of women’s intelligent through the main character’s strategies to release the citizens of small kingdoms from the slave trade in The Woman King movie. To reach the objective, the writer adjusts the theories of Postcolonialism and Feminism theories, oppression and radical. Oppression is utilized to show the facts of oppression experienced by the citizens of small kingdoms.  Radical feminism is applied to reveal Nanisca’s strategies to release them. In addition, the writer uses qualitative approach and observe and library research to do this research.

The results of analyzing the fact of oppression are slave trade done by Oba Ade and Europeans toward the citizens of small kingdoms. To release them from the slave trade, Nanisca has her own strategies such as creating Agojie warriors, giving the new idea to the king to replace the tribute from slave trade into the harvest, and releasing the captives from the slave trade attacking Oyo and European troops, and releasing the captives caught by Oba Ade. These are the portrayal of women’s intelligent to fight the oppression.
