The writer chooses the film I FEEL PRETTY as the main source to be analyzed since this film really reflects the current situation where women are competing to achieve a definition of beauty which is always changing because of the framing done by the media and society. Beside that, it can be as a new knowledge and learning at once through this film.
The objectives of this thesis are: (1) to describe the beauty standards that are portrayed by media and society. (2) to analyze the struggle that Renee has to deal with in order to actualize her-self in fashionable society. (3) to find out the effects of Renee Bennett’s behavioral changes towards herself and other people.
This film tells about Renee Bennett struggles to actualize herself while overcoming a lack of self-acceptance due to the beauty standards portrayed by the media and society. Due to those conditions, Renee is portrayed getting attitude changes caused by her self-defense mechanisms, which is denying her physical appearances.
In analyzing this film, the writer applied a social-psychology approach and psychological approach. To explain how the media and society influence Renee Bennett’s psychology, the writer portray the beauty standards uses the Social-Psychology approach. While the psychological approach is used to analyze the mental state of Renee Bennet during her struggle in actualizing herself.
