A COMPREHENSIVE TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF THE COMPLEX SENTENCES IN AYU UTAMI’S SAMAN TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH BY PAMELA ALLEN

Abstract

This study analyzes how the complex sentences in the novel entitled Saman are translated into English based on the aspects of meaning fidelity, readability, and naturalness. The objective of this study is to find out the meaning equivalence of complex sentences in Indonesia and their translation in English. This study applies qualitative method. The main data is taken from Ayu Utami's Saman and its translation in English whereas the supporting data is taken from other sources such as books and the internet. The analysis is described and explained along with the solution supported by translation theories. The results of this study note that the translation of this novel can be classified as a good translation work. Almost all complex sentences can be translated according to the equivalent meaning from the source language (Indonesian) to the target language (English), although there are some that are interpreted incorrectly. Therefore, the results of this study can be used as an example for learning translation.
