THE EFFECTS OF NEGLECTFUL PARENTING STYLE ON THE SPEAKER AND THE EFFORTS TO OVERCOMING TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES CAUSED BY HER PARENTS IN KELLY CLARKSON’S SONG, BECAUSE OF YOU

Abstract

This song was written and sung by Kelly Clarkson, and tells a lot about the traumatic experience of the speaker who came from a broken home family. The speaker expressed her disappointment with her parents and also pointed out how she coped with the trauma.

The objectives of this study are: (1) to explain the literal meaning of song lyrics in order to create better and clearer understanding to answer the other questions more deeply; (2)  to find out about the effects of neglectful parenting style on the speaker; (3) to discuss more deeply about the speaker’s effort to overcoming her traumatic experiences by her parents.

In this thesis, the writer took qualitative research because the object of the research taken from a song, and then the writer used the lyric of the text for analyzing the problem formulation that had been compiled in this thesis.

To analyze this song, in the first problem the writer interprets the literal meaning of each lyric applies Formalism approach, while to answer the second and the third problems the writer applies Psychological approach to support her analysis. The theory in Psychology is Parental Divorce, Trauma, Neglectful Parenting Style and Unconfident.  

The writer analyzed the existing problems and found that the reason the speaker was traumatized and unconfident was her parents divorced and her mother's negligent parenting style after divorcing from the speaker's father. It also shows the speaker's efforts in overcoming the trauma she has had to live a normal life like others.
