An Error Analysis in the Translation of Expletive ‘there’ into Indonesian

Abstract

Structural differences between English and Indonesian usually cause problems for the students to translate. The same problem also occurs in translating English sentences containing expletive ‘there’ from English into Indonesian. The objectives of this research are to find out types of the errors that students make in translating English sentences containing expletive ‘there’ into Indonesian and to know the most dominant type of their translation errors. This paper applies descriptive qualitative method and library research to find any information relating to the topic of this paper, such as books, journals, and websites. The samples are the sixth semester, English major students of Pertiwi School of Foreign Languages, academic year 2020-2021. The data is taken from the translation of English sentences containing expletive ‘there’ into Indonesian done by the students in their quiz.  In analyzing the data the writer applies content analysis and  a classification of errors proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982) called Surface Strategy Taxonomy. There are four types of errors, namely addition, omission, misformation, and misordering.The result of this research shows that 20,58% is omission error, addition error is 8%, misformation errors is 44.11%, and misordering error is 27,20%.. The highest errors that the students make is misformation errors.
