THE ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION SHIFT FROM ENGLISH TO INDONESIAN OF THE FOURTH SEMESTER STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION AT STBA PERTIWI

Abstract

There are so many techniques in translating a text from English to Indonesian. One of them is translation shift. This technique is very important to learn because there are many structural differences between English and Indonesian. The objectives of this research are to find out kinds of translation shifts which are proposed by Catford,  and  the most dominant translation shift that occurs in the translation which is analyzed in the target language. In doing this research, the writer applies descriptive qualitative method because the data source is the translation of the fourth semester students of STBA Pertiwi in July 2020. Another aim is to find out the most dominant translation shift which occurs in their translation in Indonesian as the target language. Besides, the writer applies library research in order to get information related to the topic of this research from other sources, such as books, journals, and internet. Based on the analysis of the data of this research, the shifts occur in the 56 sentences are 95% belongs to category shift, and only 5% is level shifts. The result shows that category shift consists of 37% unit shift, 37% structure shift, 16% intra-system shift, and 5% class shift. The writer concludes that the most dominant shifts that occur in the translation in Indonesian are unit shift and structure shift.
