CHARLIE ROAN’S AND HER SUPPORTERS' STRUGGLE TO STOP NFFA’S POLICY IN MAINTAINING THE PURGE, ALLOWING THE CITIZENS TO KILL EACH OTHER, AND TO SAVE THE CITIZENS FROM THE POLICY IN JAMES DEMONACO’S FILM THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR

Abstract

Movies are the literary works which are interesting to be analyzed in the research. This article analyzes the issues found in one of the movies. The movie is The Purge: Election Year that is directed by James Demonaco. This movie is about a woman, Charlie Roan, who survived from the murders on the night of the purge, but, her family was killed. It happened 18 years ago. After a few years later, she became US senator and she nominated herself to be the candidate of the USA president. Her purpose is to change the purge. In reaching her purpose, she got many obstacles from people whom created the purge. They tried to kill her and her supporters.

             This research attempts to reveal: (1) NFFA’S purpose in maintaining the purge, allowing the citizens to kill each other, as NFFA’s policy. And (2) Charlie Roan and her supporters’ struggle to stop NFFA’s policy and to save the citizens from the policy. To reveal the goals of this research, the study uses sociological approach and its theories. The theories are power abuse, oppression, and crime. In analyzing the first goal, this research applies the theory of power abuse. And oppression and crime are taken to analyze the last goal.

This study uses qualitative method because it explains the analysis by using words and sentences. The results of application of the power abuse is NFFA has its purpose in maintaining the purge, allowing the citizens to get good financial and economy. By having the purge day, they can reduce the poor without spending much money. So, the citizens can kill each other without their interference directly. Moreover, the NFFA's actions to  defend the purge are getting rid the opponents and citizens who against the policy by kidnapping and killing them, allowing the migrants or tourists to take part in the purge activities, and using the religion to kill the citizens. These actions are NFFA’s ways to have better economy for their organization.  Their actions represent the abuse of power because the head of NFFA uses his authority to have the purge policy that the society obey his policy.

For the result of the last problem using oppressions and crime theories, there are ways done by  Charlie Roan and her supporters struggle to stop NFFA policy and to save the citizens. They are Roan proposes herself to be the candidate of president to abolish the purge night, and the supporters help and protect Roan and the citizens whom are the victims of the purge night. Those ways are the cooperation between Roan, Leo, Marcus, Laney, and Joe, and Dante and his members. In reaching their goal to abolish the policy, they kill the members and the guards of NFFA. This is a kind of crime, but they do the crime because of the oppressions they get from NFFA.

Although this article uses Sociological theories, it hopes that it can be a good reference for other researches who do the research and write their articles.
